WHY BUY A NATURAL DEODORANT?
Why buy a natural deodorant?
Using a natural deodorant in a nutshell is better for you and better for the environment!
Did you know?
Many off-the-shelf deodorants and antiperspirants contain controversial chemicals that stay on your skin long after you shower. Aluminium, triclosan, phthalates, parabens, propylene glycol and formaldehyde are absorbed into your bloodstream and, although you may not be able to detect them, they are there.
Traditional antiperspirants work by blocking sweat, they do this by entering through the pores and swelling up in the gland to form a barrier. If the sweat can’t escape, the bacteria can’t get to it. In order to create this pore blocking effect antiperspirants use aluminium compounds such as aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium zirconium chlorohydrate complexes. These metals block the sweat glands and prevent a perfectly natural process from taking place. You know those disgusting yellow arm pit stains on clothes that we blame on sweat? It’s actually the chemicals in antiperspirants.
Why should I avoid parabens in a deodorant?
Parabens (butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben) are widely used as preservatives in deodorants and antiperspirants. Parabens mimic estrogen in the body and have been found inside breast cancer tumours. They also disrupt the endocrine system. Although the link to breast cancer isn’t proven, we like to take the route of caution with this one and believe that further research in this field is necessary before spraying it onto our bodies daily.
Why should I avoid aluminium in is a deodorant?
Aluminium is in pretty much all deodorants and is absorbed when applied to the skin. Studies show that six times more aluminium is absorbed into the bloodstream after shaving due to the razor blade causing tiny micro cuts.
Aluminium accumulates in your kidneys, brain, lungs, liver and thyroid.
Lifetime over-exposure to aluminium has also been linked to neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Recently, aluminium has been measured in human breast tissue, breast cysts and nipple fluid. In nipple fluids, levels of aluminium were higher in women with breast cancer than those without.
Breast Cancer UK supports a ban on the use of aluminium compounds in under-arm products. Their report concluded that, based on current knowledge, aluminium in deodorant is NOT SAFE.
One study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that the use of aluminium-based antiperspirants increased the risk of developing Alzheimer’s later in life by 60 percent. Add to that a 2009 study from the University of Reading, U.K., that found a correlation between “the increase in cancers of the outside upper quadrant of the breast with the increase in the use of chemical cosmetics, including antiperspirant”
Hopefully now you have a better understanding of why you should buy a natural deodorant. Instead of buying a synthetically produced deodorant or antiperspirant.
Start your days the natural way!
The Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District offers some of the finest trail and fell running in the country. Here I have put together a list of kit I have tried, tested and recommend you carry when going out trail running.
First of all its important to plan your route using a map and let somebody know where you are going and give them a rough time of when you expect to be back.
It is also important to look at the weather and have an alternative bad weather route, you don’t want to be coming halls fell ridge on Blencathra with gusts of 60mph forecast. I recommend that you use the MET Office and MWIS for up to date weather forecast in upland environments.
Having the essential kit for trail running will maximise your enjoyment and experience in the hills. Been prepared and safe in the hills, can sadly be the difference between life and death.
Here I have listed what I recommend you carry on runs for up to one hour and two to three hours:
Up To One Hour
I haven’t listed any personal clothing, tights, shorts, long or short sleeved technical t-shirts, vests, socks, shoes or waterproofs this is all down to weather and personal preference.
Waist Belt 2 to 5 litre capacity
There are loads styles of waist belts and race vests for short one hour runs where minimum kit is required, we would recommend you go with something two to five litres in capacity, this should give you enough space.
The Lowe Alpine Lightflite 2 is a sleek designed belt pack for carrying essentials on your training runs. With two fast access pockets for an energy bar or gel, the 2 litre capacity provides enough room for trail running essentials like a windproof and phone. This Lowe Alpine belt pack features a comfortable padded wicking back and secure webbing belt. Stay safe and increase visibility after dark with the reflective LED light loop.
First Aid Kit
You hope it never gets used and you may not need it, but you may also come across somebody that does.
Lifesystems Light & Dry Nano First Aid Kit
The Light & Dry Nano First Aid Kit from LifeSystems has a space saving design and the contents are sealed within a LokTop waterproof bag to keep everything dry. Designed with racing events in mind, it is perfect for patching up common, minor ailments on the go. We also recommend you carry a 20p coin in it too more places are charging for using the a public loo. We are recommend for personal use carrying two or four ibuprofen and two aspirin tablets in the first aid kit.
Map and Compass
Carrying a map and compass is super important for knowing where you are going, it gives you the option to make an on the move change to your route and avoids you getting misplaced and spending longer out than planned.
Alfresco Adventures delivers 1:1 and 2:1 navigation courses in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. It is so important that you know how to use a map and compass, its pointless carrying it if you don’t.
We personally recommend printing out a your planned run onto a A4 piece of paper and laminating it, we use the OS Maps Online and using either a 1.25k or 1.5k scale. For longer runs we personally prefer the Harvey Maps as the are light weight and come on a waterproof paper.
There are lots of options for compasses, but we would always go for the Silva Expedition 4 compass it gives you the range for working with different map scales.
Anti Chafing Cream
Nothing can take the spring from your step quite like the uncomfortable effects of chaffing. I decant a little bit of the our anti chafing cream into a small 40ml aluminium tin, just enough to see you through if you get caught out.
Food and Water
This is a personal choice for a run up to an hour and half I don’t carry any food just a small bottle of water.
Osprey Hydraulics Soft Flask 250ml
Osprey Hydraulics™ Soft Flasks are designed to compress as you drink and so reducing bulk while you are on the go. With a standard sport cap and bite valve with extension tube options these lightweight BPA & PVC Free drinks bottles are durable and robust and will pack away into any small bag.
Mobile Phone
To capture those stunning views and to use in an emergency if you require it.
This is the essential kit I recommend for trail running, up to an hour, using a five litre race belt there is still room for a windproof jacket (Montane Featherlite Trail Jacket), some light weight running gloves and a Buff.
For Two To Three Hours
You need to carry the same as for up to one hour, but you may want to change your waist belt to a running vest for around 6 to 10 litres in capacity.
INOV-8 RACE ELITE RUNNING PACK
This pack is the race version of the award winning race ultra vest. Boasting all the same features but with fixed adjustment points that make its use simple and easy. All mesh construction with stretch pockets and no zips. Able to carry up to three litres of hydration at a time, the Race Elite is supplied with two 500ml Bottles. Giving a full capacity of 4 litres and weighing in at just 210g its the perfect compatriot for Race Runners.
You can get into some quite remote places within a two to three hour run and with that comes an increased element of risk. I highly recommend the SOL Emergency Bivvy and hopefully it stays in the bottom of you pack and never comes out.
The SOL Emergency Bivvy is ultra-light, ultra-warm full protection shelter. The bivvy is made from the same heat-reflective polyethylene as Adventure Medical Kit’s world-famous emergency blankets (reflecting 90% of your body heat back to you), with the added benefit of being fully sealed so that no wind, rain, or snow can get inside.
Food and Water
I would look to carry two 500ml Osprey soft bottles, but its sunny I may carry more using the Inov-8 Race Running Pack you have space to carry a bladder should you require more water.
Food is a personal preference I prefer to eat fresh, homemade food and snacks, for example tuna rolls, peanut butter with jam rolls, homeamde flapjacks, trail mix, salted crisps, but if I was to buy some bars for running I would go for the Cliff Bars they don’t upset my stomach like gels and other protein bars do.
Additional items for winter maybe hand warms, waterproof mittens, a headtorch, spare batteries for your headtorch.

A cheap and effective improvised soap dish, that will help prolong the life of your soap.
Travel light with our improvised soap dish and make your favourite soap last much longer.
All you need is a:
- FeGoo Soap Tin
- Elastic band
That is it! When you aren’t using it you can store the elastic band in the soap tin too. All you need to place the elastic band over the soap tin, twist it twice and place it back over the tin. You should have then created a cross over the tin and the soap can be suspended over the tin allowing air to circulate around it enabling it to dry out, before your next use.
Keeping a soap dry in between uses will stop the soap from turning soft and mushy and if you are on a weekend away or travelling around the world you want to prolong the life of you soap.
Hope you liked our improvised soap dish, please join our community to keep up to date with offers, customers adventures and new products!
One of many things that made us set up FeGoo was the years of travel we have under our belts and the impact that it causes to the land, air and people. The world is massive place with so many great places to explore, but we should all travel a bit more sustainably. One small change is one step in the right direction and if millions of people took just one step the impact will be huge!
What is sustainable travel?
The World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “development [which] meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunity for the future. It is envisaged as leading to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social, and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity, and life support system.”
Other buzz words are responsible travel, eco-tourism and green travel. These terms, along with sustainable travel encompass the idea of being more conscious of how we travel. They seek to minimise negative impacts on the environment and aim to have a positive impact for local communities and economies.
Here are a few ways you can travel more sustainably :
• Start at home– before leaving on your next adventure think about what you are packing and taking with you, especially in your wash kit.
All of our body care products are made using natural, organic ingredients and have been designed to have minimum impact on the environment.
• Buy local– When travelling, it can be tempting to find and go to shops or restaurants that remind us of home (McDonalds, Costa, Subway just to name a few). While there is nothing wrong with this, I’m sure you didn’t travel half way across the world to eat and buy the exact same stuff you can get back home. Where is the adventure in that?
We travel to explore and discover exciting new things, so get out there and do just that. Support local souvenir shops, eat where the locals go and try a new dish. The best part is that by doing this, you are not only supporting sustainable travel but by avoiding tourist hotspots, your wallet will be a lot fuller, helping you to stretch your dollar even further.
• Think before you haggle– It can be tempting to haggle at the local markets and is the culture in places like South East Asia, it’s important to keep the bigger picture in mind and ask yourself, if saving that extra bit of cash is worth it. That 40 Thai Baht (£1) might not be a lot for you, but it could mean a meal for that person’s family. You had enough to hop on a plane, book a hotel and come over with spending money, who really needs that little bit of money more?
• Minimise your footprint– Think twice about accepting that plastic bag while overseas. Why? In developing countries, waste management is a major problem and we can unwittingly contribute towards it. The locals may not understand the impact that waste has on their environment or have effective waste removal set up in their communities.
• Stay in locally owned accommodation– Opting to stay in locally owned accommodation, which can include guesthouses, B&B’s, Airbnb’s or you could even couch surf. Doing this you are helping support local business and helping boost their local enconomy, rather than going to a foreign owned hotel or resort company.
• Don’t Give to beggars– This is a tough one because seeing a child or even an adult beg on the streets pulls on any decent person’s heart strings. However, part of travelling responsibly is keeping in mind that some are doing it because it is easy money and that there are children being taken out of school and forced to beg on the streets (remember Slum Dog Millionaire). Obviously, this is not the case for everyone, but if you want to help out, buy the person food or something to drink instead.
• Use Public Transport– Making use of public transport is a way you can reduce your carbon emissions footprint. Instead of a taking a taxi, grab a bus ticket and travel with the locals. It’s a great way to see the place you are staying in and keep your budget healthy. Alternatively you could hire a bike and start exploring.
• Final Point, Travel with a SMILE and spread the GOOD VIBES – You are a tourist after all in their country, smiling is free and when you smile at others, it gives them a boost of happiness! It will change the way they perceive you and you may even make their day just from a smile.
Have you been on a recent adventure using our products? We would love to hear your story and feature it on Our Community section of the website.
Well lets just cut straight to the point!
We attended the Deer Shed Festival in July and won the festivals ‘Sustainable Non-Food Trader Award’. We are over the moon that we have won our first award!
In a letter we received from them they quoted “Our team very impressed with your products, the packaging and the overall vibe of the stall” and “On further research we found out about your re-fill centre, this confirmed our decision”.
It was great to see that the Deer Shed Festival had banned the sale of single use plastic bottles and that plastic straws were also banned. They were encouraging people bring re-usable bottles to fill up at water standpipes around site, or a reusable pint cup for you beer. It would be great to see more festivals taking the a greener, more sustainable route.
We attended the festival as a whole family, with the car and roof box packed to the rafters like we were going on a real big road trip (not 25 miles down the road). I’m not sure who was more excited me and Gem or the kids! We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy weekend though keeping the kids entertained and happy, whilst still having to work and promote our products, ethos and vision. Been very excited about our first festival with FeGoo and the kids, Gem and I forgot the rain coats and wellies, we just had sandals, shorts and t-shirts, which was ok for the Friday, but Saturday the heavens opened we soon realised we hadn’t checked the local weather, the site soon turned into a field of mud, mud and more mud. It was that wet and muddy on Saturday we thought it would’ve been a write-off but people still came over to chat, enquire what we were doing and buy our products- thank you to those that did.
We set up late on the Thursday night and was made vey welcome by our stall holders either side of us, which was great and been next to a stall that makes sells bubbles, we knew the kids would be entertained when we couldn’t escape and go listen to some bands and soak up the festival atmosphere. Asking Arlo (aged 4) what was his highlight of the festival he says ‘the bubbles’ not the music, crafts, dancing, sliding in the mud, the BUBBLES! Gem and I enjoyed everything we both managed to escape and see some brilliant musicians play, we will be back at the Deer Shed 11 next year. Hopefully we can have three days of blissful sunshine!
And finally…..
Does this mean we can now say we have ‘Award Winning Products’? haha
Is there such thing as an ethical bank?
We strongly believe as well as having ethical products, we should do our best to make sure everything behind the scenes is also ethical. Practice what you preach and all that! So we started researching banks and found that lots of big banks have a notoriously bad history. Even in the last five years, banks have been condemned for funding rainforest destruction, for their involvement in highly controversial projects which damage the environment and hinder the fight against climate change, and for lending to governments of the world’s poorest countries so they can buy expensive military equipment. That we don’t want to be a part of!
We found a ethical bank score rating on the Good Shopping Guide and came across Triodos business banking. It has some issues like the only branch is in Bristol and we are based in North Yorkshire. They don’t currently offer a business bank card, but we can manage with that. They have said a business bank card is coming (September 2019), so watch this space. Triodos Bank want to build a community united in their desire to make a positive impact on society, culture and the environment which is in line with our with our ethos.
It is important though that you as a customer know we are trying to go the extra mile in everything we do, not just in our products.
“We help you feel good and do your thing”
Want to be a FeGoo ambassador? It needs to work for us both! You help us look cool, feel good about ourselves and help us design better stuff. We help you feel good and do your thing – better. Sometimes that means we send you free stuff or even make something specifically for you. More generally, we can offer a great deal of exposure for what you do (eg your work, project or cause) and help out with a bit of discount.
The best way to approach us is to be clear about what you want and why. What products do you need, how are you going to use them and why? It might help to include examples of what you’ve done already.
We receive so many requests that we decided to offer some advice – the better it works for us the more we can help you out. (Top tip – keep it short and don’t be greedy!) Think about the synergy between what you are trying to do and who we are. If there isn’t a good reason for us to collaborate/help each other out, then save yourself the trouble.
We support very few people and none of them have a contract with us, they just pop in for coffee or give us a call and we do our best to help out with what they are up to next. The only ‘rule’ is we have to like you and you have to like us.
What we don’t support!
It’s best to think of the link between what you are doing and how we might help out – we don’t generally support charity treks and holidays and will not make cash donations. Unfortunately, we can’t support everyone and here at FeGoo we have charities we feel passionately about – these tend to be related to outdoor sports, ethical business and our environment.
What we will consider
A wide range of adventures, expeditions, trips, if they attract us. Or maybe you work outside, or in harsh conditions? Your application has to be special, and fit in with what we are doing at any particular time, or help introduce us to a new activity – it might be just down to luck.
Getting in touch
Please send all requests to info@fegoo.co.uk. We do read every application though we cannot reply to everyone that writes in.
Your aims – tell us why this is a good thing for us to be involved with, what you’re actually doing, and how you plan to make it work for us.
Personality – what you’re doing might not be an extreme adventure, but your personality and imagination can create great stories that people will love.
Communication – if you are used to writing for the web, have an active Facebook, Instagram or Twitter account then that’s helpful. Blogs, videos, podcasts and images are great to share with our customers (and potential customers). Tell us what social media you use, and how you will use it as a FeGoo ambassador.
Groups and events
Perhaps you’re planning an expedition or project, perhaps for education, research, aid or a challenge. We may be able to offer discount, or products for testing in exchange for interesting and informative trip reports about what you were doing and why. We might use this to provide content to our site so people can read and share, so increasing awareness about your project or cause.
We are happy to discuss supporting or being involved in events (weird and wonderful, small and large!). Please tell us where, when, what it covers, how many people, whether it is a one-off or regular, and how you think we could collaborate. Even if we can’t be there/support your event, we might be to offer prizes or some other mutually beneficial activity. We look for a good value-exchange – perhaps helping us promote FeGoo with clickable links, banner ads on your website, our logo on the event t-shirt or a shout out during the prize giving.
Thanks for thinking of us – feel good, and do your thing!
Sarah from Fit For Adventure has been using our Dry Shampoo +, here is what she thinks
I use the FeGoo Dry Shampoo + when I’m out on my adventures and expeditions. As a lover of the outdoors, I spend as much time as I can out there, which means I often wild camp and stay out for days at a time. Keeping my hair in check whilst I’m out and about can be a bit of a nightmare, particularly when I have no facility to wash it for a few days. I’m not someone that puts much time into my appearance, but I do like to feel as clean as I can whilst I’m out exploring or challenging myself on outdoor expeditions.
I love that FeGoo Dry Shampoo + comes in a small bottle – it’s ideal for travelling and camping, and particularly longer expeditions when every last gram of weight counts. I cannot believe how long this little bottle is lasting too, I’ve been using it for months and it just keeps on going! There’s some kind of wizardry in that dinky bottle I’m sure. My favourite thing about it is the smell. It has an amazing lemony smell, which gives me the illusion that I’m freshly washed when I’m not – nothing wrong with tricking yourself into feeling good now is there! I also like that it’s completely natural, organic and not full of harsh chemicals. The fact that it’s not a spray is great too – much better for the environment!
I’d recommend the FeGoo dry shampoo + to anyone needing a go-to pick me up for their hair, particularly for travelling, expeditions and adventure.

As well as passing samples onto a few friends, I’ve been using FeGoo Skin Balm on a regular basis for over a year now, and quite intensely whilst working and playing in the mountains of Costa Blanca this winter. Here the rock is sharp and very quickly takes a toll on skin, with hands suffering the most. When I say sharp, I’m talking razor sharp limestone found on newly discovered crags. This is gorgeous rock to climb on, but wow it can really batter the fingers.
Why try FeGoo?
I can think of plenty good reasons, here’s a few for starters.
Firstly, it smells wonderful and that’s always a big plus point. Not only is it going to help sooth our tired hands, it’ll leave us smelling fresh, win win.
Oh and It’s made in the UK in small batches. So no unnecessary transport and environmental costs.
Topping this off, it is crammed full of ethically sourced organic ingredients. Now I’m no chemist, but when I read ‘Calendula Officinalis flower oil’ (as an example) it sounds pretty good. So, it’s nice to our skin and the planet, another one of those win win moments!
A feature I’ve come to really appreciate is. It stays as a nice solid tablet even in hot climates, this helps reduce the amount of waste each time it’s applied to the skin. As we spend a big chunk of winter working in the mountains of Costa Blanca, this is an important one for us. Temperatures during our early and late season will often by mid – high 20C’s in the shade! For anyone using this in much cooler climates, for example, a typical UK winter. I would advise keeping FeGoo in a warm room for best results.
I’ve found that applying the FeGoo Skin Balm at night-time the most useful. Actually waiting until going to bed, thus allowing it uninterrupted time overnight to work some magic, ready for another day at the crag or on the mountain.
Plenty of climbing friends have fingers that are absolutely knackered due to a mix of too much hard climbing and not taking enough care of themselves. This ultimately leads to needing days, or in extreme cases, weeks of rest away from the crags, and this is so often avoidable. Try FeGoo Skin Balm. It looks and smells so much better than finger tape too!!
Definitely worth having as an integral part of any sport climbing rack of gear. Who goes rock climbing these days and doesn’t pack a chalk bag? Yeh that’s right, pretty much nobody. It’s standard kit. Why? Because it helps, even if that’s sometimes only on a psychological level!
FeGoo Skin Balm is now part of my standard climbing kit every bit as much as chalk is. I’ve seen the benefits, now it’s your turn….
Thanks for reading.
Please feel free to give me a call / e-mail anytime, I’m more than happy to chat about my FeGoo experiences.
And if you’re looking for some adventure. We arrange a wide range of activities in Costa Blanca and The Lake District. Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Ridge Scrambling, Via Ferrata, Guided Walks, and more. We are always exploring, finding the next ‘hidden gem’. But also really do know the places we work very well indeed, so are confident we can put together the perfect adventure for you.
